Sock pulled the biggest upset of the when he make quick work of Florian Mayer on the Grandstand in front of a pro-American crowd, Sock dominated from start to finish and won in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, 3-2 (Retired). Sock came into this year’s tournament ranked 248th and without a win over a top-50 player. Sock, along with Melanie Oudin, were winners of the 2011 U.S. Open Mixed-Doubles Title. Sock will face Italian Flavio Cipolla in round two action.
"I’ve had some up and down results, but I think overall I feel better about my game," said Sock. "I think today is definitely good for the confidence and good for the overall game. I’m playing the tournament to compete and try and win matches and play as far as I can in the draw. Whoever I’m playing, I’m going to give it my all and try to win. Definitely winning last year [mixed-doubles] gave me more confidence to try to advance in the draw as far as I can. I’m going to try to use that and go as far as I can this year."
Fellow American Mardy Fish had a tough first round draw facing the 55th ranked player in the world, Go Soeda of Japan, in his opening match. Fish played well on the big points though and survived two tiebreakers to advance in straight sets 7-6, 7-6, 6-3. Fish could meet Roger Federer in the fourth round, as the top-seeded Federer advanced over American Donald Young on the opening night of action, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. Fish next faces Russian Nikolay Davydenko in round two.
"He played really well in the beginning," said Fish of Soeda. "I mean, I served for the first and the second. Normally I win those games and win those sets 6-3 or 6-4. A couple loose points and he played a good point. In the first, set he broke me. He played three good points out of the four that I lost. That guy’s had a lot of good results this summer. He beats good players. So he’s a good player."
