Another Big Week for Tennis on Long Island

Local tennis action will kick-off this week on Wednesday night, May 11th as the 2011 USTA Eastern/Long Island Region Annual Awards Dinner will take place at the Crest Hollow Country Club, located at 8325 Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury, N.Y. The 2011 USTA Eastern/Long Island Region will honor many of the outstanding accomplishments by players, coaches, volunteers and others who have helped grow the sport of tennis on Long Island.
This weekend will also be filled with tennis-related activities on Long Island. The CityParks Foundation Reebok Tryouts will take place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., on Saturday, May 14th from 3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. For advanced juniors who desire, but cannot afford specialized coaching, the Reebok Junior Tennis Academy is a year-round free training program for 50 participants selected at annual open tryouts. Suffolk Zone’s "Spring Into Wellness Health Fair" will take place on Saturday, May 14th at the Smithhaven Mall in Lake Grove, N.Y. from 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. In addition to registering for Suffolk County Junior Tennis League (SCJTL) programs for the summer, attendees will have the opportunity to see a QuickStart Tennis demonstration at 12:30 p.m. by USTA National QuickStart Tennis Specialist Joe Arias, SCJTL founder and executive director. This is a perfect event for kids 10 years of age and under looking to get started in the sport of tennis.
High school players are gearing up for their individual championships this weekend as well. The Nassau County Singles and Doubles High School Boys Tennis Tournament will take place at Oceanside High School in Oceanside, N.Y. beginning Saturday, May 14th with play each day scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. While the team playoffs will begin next Monday, this weekend will be a chance for the top players to showcase their talents and go head to head for the County title. The top three singles players and doubles teams will advance to the State Championship to be played June 2-4.
