Azarenka Advances at Luxembourg Open

Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, ranked number three in the world, defeated Italy’s Alberta Brianti, 6-0, 6-1 at the BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open. Azarenka advances to face the unseeded Iveta Benešová of the Czech Republic, a winner over the number seven seed, Maria Kirilenko of Russia, after Kirilenko was forced to withdraw due to injury.

The upset of the tournament so far came at the expense of Russian Ana Ivanovic, who was a 3-6, 2-6 loser to Anne Viensouk Keothavong of Great Britain. Keothavong advances to face Bibiane Schoofs of the Netherlands, who was a 1-6, 6-1, 7-5 winner over Canada’s Rebecca Marino. 

Also advancing was the number six seed, Julia Goerges of Germany, a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Tamira Paszek of Austria. Goerges will seek a berth to the quarterfinals when she faces Anastasija Sevastova from Latvia.
