Azarenka Named Top Women’s Seed for 2012 Sony Ericsson Open
The 2012 Sony Ericsson Open has announced the women’s seeds, with the number one seed being Victoria Azarenka of Belarus. Azarenka captured the Australian Open championship earlier this year after defeating Maria Sharapova in the finals, 6-1, 6-4. In 2012 alone, Azarenka has won three titles, including the Australian Open.
Sharapova is now fighting her way back in the rankings and has gained the number two seed in this tournament. She is hoping to finally win the Sony Ericsson after making the finals on three other occasions. Serena Williams is also making her way back into this tournament after a two year hiatus from the Ericsson.
Competition commences on March 20 for the women and on March 21 for the men. Qualifying rounds into the main draw will take place on the previous Monday and Tuesday, March 19 and 20.
