Victoria Azarenka defeated Arantxa Rus in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, in her opening round match at the 2012 Generali Ladies Linz event in Germany. Azarenka won the first eight games of the match, defeating Rus in a little over an hour and claiming her WTA-leading 63rd match win of the year.

"Linz has been an incredible tournament the last few years," Axarenka said. "Looking at the names who have won this title, it’s an honor to be here and to play. The motivation is big. I would like to get the trophy. I like to play tennis, I like to win, and I want to keep the momentum going. Nothing can replace the feeling of winning matches and tournaments."

Also advancing was second-seeded Ana Ivanovic, a 7-5, 6-3 winner over Monica Niculescu. Ivanovic is playing the Generali Ladies Linz for the fifth time and upped her record to 15-2 at the event. Next up for Ivanovic is former top 10 player Andrea Petkovic.
