Switzerland’s Roger Federer defeated Michael Llodra of France in straight sets, 6-0, 7-6, to advance at the Dubai Championships. Great Britain’s Andy Murray also advanced in a close three-set match against German qualifier, Michael Berrer, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Federer took the first set in just 17 min., breaking Llodra on all occasions. The second set was much closer which advanced to a tie-breaker where Federer edged ahead 8-6 to take the set and match.

"It’s always great to start off a tournament winning the first set 6-0," said Federer. "I don’t know when that’s the last time it’s happened to me."

Murray match against Berrer was his first since falling to Djokovic in the semifinals of the Australian Open. In the deciding set of the match, Murray looked a little slow, however, broke to lead 5-4 and then close out the match.

“It was one of those strange sets," said Murray. "It was quite a frustrating match because I was up a break twice in the second set, and each time I think gave it straight back. I could have made it a little bit easier for myself if I played a bit better."

Also advancing was Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, a 7-6, 6-4 straight sets winner over Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus.
