Boys High School Recap: Syosset, Plainedge and Mepham All Close Out Undefeated Seasons

The boys’ tennis regular season in Nassau County wrapped up yesterday afternoon, as three different teams from three different conferences finished its regular seasons undefeated.

First, in Conference I-B, the Syosset Braves visited Manhasset and beat the Indians by a score of 6-1 to finish the season 13-0 overall and 12-0 in league play. Led by Dylan Granat, who defeated Eric Yu 6-4, 6-0 at third singles to clinch the match, the Braves won the Conference to earn a first round bye in the playoffs where it awaits the winner of the match between Hewlett and Port Washington.

Also seeking a perfect season, the Plainedge Red Devils hosted Valley Stream North in a Conference IV-A clash. Plainedge cruised to the 6-1 victory behind a couple of its doubles tandems. Dylan Pagan & Kyle Oleksak beat Aaron Chaing & Matt Shapiro 6-4, 6-0, while Justin Tarantino & Ryan Easterbrook beat James Holewa & Leston Gibbons 6-3, 7-6. The victory moves Plainedge to 12-0 for the season and heads into the playoffs without a loss to date.

The Mepham Pirates handled its business in Conference III-A, visiting Hicksville and sweeping all seven matches to move to 12-0 to close out the year. Oren Zigdon & Mark Vink led the way, defeating John Soderlund & Abbishek Dashi 6-1, 6-4 at second doubles. Also in Conference III-A, Carle Place hosted Oyster Bay looking to win its fourth straight game. At third doubles, Carle Place used a duo that was playing in its first ever varsity match in Matt Rivera & Tim Coelho. The rookie pair handled Oyster Bay’s Andreas Tsoumpariotis & Patricio Vega 6-4, 6-0 to clinch the match for Carle Place, who finishes with a record of 9-3 and heads into the playoffs with momentum.

In Conference II-A, the South Side Cyclones wrapped up its season by going on the road to beat the Lynbrook Owls. In a well-played match, the Cyclones were able to pull out the 5-2 victory to clinch its first division title since 2009 and earn a number one seed in the Conference II playoffs.

In a battle for a third place finish in the Conference, the Massapequa Chiefs hosted North Shore as the two teams were neck and neck in the conference standings. The match was clinched by the third doubles tandem of Michael Young & Robert Seck, who defeated North Shore’s Ryan Tine & Murat Ogeturk 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
