Last year’s BMW Open by FWU AG title winner began his defense of that title on Thursday, as the 16th ranked player in the world Tommy Haas took down Alejandro Fallo. Haas cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 straight set victory over the Columbian to move into the quarterfinals of the tournament he won last year in Munich, Germany.

The German native Haas made the most of his opportunities and played mistake-free tennis. He converted five of his seven break points in his first match since losing to Roger Federer in the fourth-round at Indian Wells a few weeks ago and a shoulder injury that nagged him since.

“I'm pretty happy with the win, obviously having been laid off for a couple of weeks and not knowing how the injury would be," said Haas. “I'm really happy with the way I played. It's always great to play in front of a full crowd at home in Germany.”

The match took just 74 minutes as the second-seed in the tournament will move on to face seventh-seeded Andreas Seppi in the quarterfinals. Seppi knocked off the Spanish qualifier Albert Ramos 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday, setting up the matchup between the German and Italian.

Ricardas Berankis also moved onto the quarterfinals on Thursday as he defeated Jurgen Melzer 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-6(6) in a long, competitive match that lasted nearly two and a half hours. Berankis took the place of Gael Monfils and capitalized on the opportunity, coming back from a 6-4 deficit in the third set to move into the quarterfinals in Munich. He will now square off with the German J.L Struff, who disposed of Ukraine’s Sergiy Stakhovski 6-3, 6-3.

In the other quarterfinal matches, Italian Fabio Fognini will take on the Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci, while Denis Istomin will face off with Martin Klizan.
