Top-seeded Novak Djokovic has advanced to the second round of Wimbledon after defeating 34th-ranked Florian Mayer of Germany, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4, on Tuesday. Djokovic hit a victorious forehand to end the match. Djokovic will challenge an American in the next round—either qualifier Bobby Reynolds or wild card Steve Johnson. The top seed has lost in the Wimbledon first round just once in the Open Era, when Lleyton Hewitt fell to Ivo Karlovic in 2003.

Also on Tuesday, eighth-seeded Juan Martin Del Potro beat Albert Ramos of Spain, 6-2, 7-5, 6-1. Del Potro hit 34 winners, including 10 aces, to defeat Ramos on only his fourth tournament on grass. Del Potro made a come-back at Wimbledon after sitting out the French Open due to respiratory problems. He maintains his record of advancing to the second round at Wimbledon in six appearances. Awaiting Del Potro is Canadian Jesse Levine, a 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 3-6, 4-3 winner over Argentine Guido Pella.

Also advancing was Bernard Tomic with a win over the 21st-seeded Sam Querrey of the United States in a five-set match, 7-6(6), 7-6(3), 3-6, 2-6. 6-3, although Querrey hit 36 aces. Tomic’s father and coach, John Tomic, is not permitted to attend Wimbledon, as he was barred from tour tournaments after being accused of head-butting his son’s partner, Thomas Drouet, near their hotel before the Madrid Open. John Tomic now faces assault charges. Bernard Tomic will face American James Blake in round two. Blake broke a five-match losing streak at Wimbledon during his 6-1, 6-3, 6-2 win over Thiemo de Bakker for a second round meeting with Tomic.

Tommy Haas, the number 13 seed, recorded his 100th major match win (100-51 overall) after a 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 victory over Dmitry Tursunov. It was their first FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting in six years and Haas’ first match win at Wimbledon since 2009.
