Federer and Nadal Among Those Moving into Quarterfinals at BNP Paribas Open

Rafael Nadal defeated a very tough opponent in qualifier Somdev Devvarman from India, 7-5, 6-4, at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells Tennis Garden to advance to the quarterfinals of the event. Nadal improved to 29-4 at Indian Wells, where he’s made the semifinals or better the last five years, winning in 2007 and 2009. Roger Federer of Switzerland also advanced with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win over American Ryan Harrison. Serbian Novak Djokovic, ranked third in the world, advanced as well with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over fellow Serb and 16th seed Viktor Troicki. The number 18 seed Richard Gasquet upset the number eight seed, Andy Roddick 6-3, 7-6 (5).
“He outplayed me from the first ball. He was obviously very confident,” Roddick said. “I tried to force it and be more aggressive in the second, but when you play that way, it starts coming in bunches. You win in bunches and you lose in bunches.”
Argintenian Juan Martin del Potro also moves onto the quarterfinals with his win over number 32-ranked Philipp Kohlschreiber from Germany, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (7). Tommy Robredo of Spain beat the number 21st-seeded American Sam Querrey, 6-1, 6-3.
In other matches, the number seven seed Tomas Berdych lost in three sets to Stanislas Wawrinka, and the number 23 seed Albert Montanes fell to Ivo Karlovic.
On the women’s side in quarterfinals action, Ana Ivanovic lost to the number 15 seed Marion Bartoli, 6-4, 7-6 (4), and Yanina Wickmayer beat the number 10 seed Shahar Peer, 6-3, 6-3.
