Defending Wimbledon Champion Roger Federer is the number one seed for Wimbledon 2010. Federer, a six-time Wimbledon winner, received the top seed Wednesday, even though Rafael Nadal recently supplanted him as number one in the world rankings. Nadal moved into the top spot after winning the French Open, while Federer slipped to number two after losing in the quarterfinals in Paris. Novak Djokovic is seeded third and Andy Murray is fourth in line with their rankings. Three-time Wimbledon runner-up Andy Roddick was seeded fifth, two spots above his ranking. French Open finalist Robin Soderling is seeded sixth. One of the biggest beneficiaries of the Wimbledon seeding committee is Lleyton Hewitt, who received the number 15 seed, despite a world ranking of 26th. Ivo Karlovic is ranked 33rd, but was bumped up to 25th in the Wimbledon seedings. Wimbledon uses its discretion to seed players based on their grass court record.

On the women’s side, Serena Williams is the number one seed, while sister Venus is the second seed setting up a potential Williams Sister final. Serena beat Venus last year for her third Wimbledon title. The only change in the women’s seedings was caused by the injury and Wimbledon withdrawal of number five, Elena Dementieva. Caroline Wozniacki is seeded third, followed by Jelena Jankovic at fourth and French Open champion Francesca Schiavone at fifth. Belgians Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin, who are returning to Wimbledon after coming out of retirement, are seeded number eight and 17, respectively.

The draw will be held Friday, and the tournament begins on Monday, June 21.
