Federer and Venus Among Those Who Advance Onward at the 2011 Australian Open

Roger Federer survived a major scare at the 2011 Australian Open on Wednesday, defeating Gilles Simon 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 6-3 in second round action. Federer was winless in two ties against Simon coming into Wednesday action, clinching the match on his fifth match point with an ace.
“I’m happy I survived a scare like today. It’s not the first time,” Federer said. “It does happen, and you just try to stay calm even though I’m not playing for much. He’s playing for the huge upset, and I’m just trying to get through. So it’s not easy.”
Venus Williams, overcoming a hip injury that nearly forced her to withdraw, defeated Sandra Zahlavoa of the Czech Republic, 6-7 (6), 6-0, 6-4 on the women’s side. Venus was forced to take a timeout after the first-set tiebreaker, but met with a WTA trainer and returned for the win.
