Federer to Represent Switzerland in Davis Cup Play

Roger Federer has announced that he will play for his home nation of Switzerland in its Davis Cup playoff tie away at the Netherlands this weekend. The top-ranked Federer joins teammates Stanislas Wawrinka, Marco Chiudinelli and Henri Laaksonen as the Swiss team tries to keep its place in the World Group.
Federer has made sporadic Davis Cup appearances, playing 21 ties since 1999, and two years ago faced criticism in his homeland when he pulled out of a tie in Kazakhstan at the last minute, shortly after the U.S. Open. Switzerland were crushed 5-0 and lost their place in the World Group. Last year, Switzerland regained their place by beating Portugal and Australia, with Federer playing in both ties.
This year, Federer lost both rubbers in which he played, both in singles and in doubles, as Switzerland was defeated 5-0 by the U.S. in the first round.
