Tomas Berdych pulled off the upset of the Sony Ericsson Open tournament, knocking off world number one-ranked Roger Federer 6-4, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (6). Berdych’s win ended a streak of eight consecutive losses against Federer.

Federer converted only two of 10 break-point chances in the match and committed a very uncharacteristic 61 unforced errors, most of which came on the backhand, normally his most reliable weapon.

Despite his difficulties during the match Federer did have a chance to close out the match in the third set tiebreak, but failed to capitalize as Berdych hit a forehand winner. Two points later, Federer’s 61st unforced error gave the set and match to Berdych sending the Czech into the Quarterfinals.
