Wednesday was a chance for both the men and the women to punch their ticket the semifinals at this year’s U.S. Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Strong winds at Arthur Ashe Stadium made playing conditions tough, but the top players fought through Day 10 at Flushing Meadows.

In the day session, seventh-seeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia maintained her high level of play in this tournament by defeating Kaia Kanepi in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5. Zvonareva is the lowest-seeded player remaining in the womens draw. In the night session, top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark defeated Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova, 6-2, 7-5. Wozniacki still has not dropped a set at this year’s U.S. Open. Wozniacki and Zvonareva will meet in Friday’s women’s semifinal. They are 2-2 head to head.

On the men’s side, Serbian Novak Djokovic easily took care of Gael Monfils from France in straight sets, 7-6, 6-1, 6-2. Monfils clearly did not like or adjust well to the swirling winds and was no match for Djokovic on this day. Djokovic, the thrid seed, will now meet second-seeded Roger Federer on Saturday afternoon in one of the men’s semifinal matches. Federer earned his trip to the semis by defeating fifth-seeded Robin Soderling of Sweden in a match that wasn’t as close people expected it to be. Federer won easily, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5.

In doubles action, the Bryan Brothers moved on to the 2010 U.S. Open Men’s Doubles Finals by defeating the team of Tommy Robredo & Marcel Granollers, 6-1, 6-4. They will be heavy favorites to win the doubles Championship when they take on the 16th-seeded team of Rohan Bopanno & Aisam Ui-Haq Qureth in the finals.

Two New Yorkers took to the courts today in the Junior Open. Oyster Bay, N.Y.’s Julia Elbaba, along with her partner, Krista Hardebeck, were defeated in the second round of Junior Girls Doubles, while Andrea Collarini teamed with Jack Sock and were victoriuous on Armstrong Court in a super tie-break to move to the third round in Junior Boys Doubles action.

On Thursday, Stanislav Wawrinka will battle Mikhail Youhzny and Spain’s Rafael Nadal will take on fellow countryman Fernando Verdasco in the two men’s quarterfinal matches.
