American Mardy Fish defeated Juan Martin del Potro, 7-5, 7-6(5), in the quarterfinals of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami. With the win, Fish will jump in the ATP rankings, likely over his longtime friend and fellow countryman, Andy Roddick.

Fish’s next opponent in Miami will be the number six ranked David Ferrer, who was victorious over Marcel Granollers 6-1, 6-2. Fish remains the only American left in contention at the Sony Ericsson Open, as the number 30 seed John Isner lost to Kevin Anderson of South Africa, 6-3, 7-6 (4).
