Fish Poised to be Top-Ranked American as He Advances at Sony Ericsson Open

There is the possibility that American Mardy Fish may leave Miami and the Sony Ericsson Open as the top-ranked U.S. born player, as he needs wins in two more rounds of the event to overtake fellow countyman Andy Roddick. Currently ranked 15th in the latest ATP rankings, Fish’s most recent vistory was a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Richard Gasquet on Sunday. Roddick lost his opening match at the Sony Ericsson and is expected to drop from his current rank of eighth.
“I certainly wouldn’t feel like the top-ranked American, considering what Andy has accomplished and what I’ve accomplished,” Fish said. “His career has quadrupled mine, at least.”
Also at the Sony Ericsson this weekend on the men’s side, the number two seed Novak Djokovic defeated James Blake, 6-2, 6-0; the number 30 seed John Isner defeated qualifier and local product Alex Bogomolov Jr., 6-2, 7-6 (4); and Juan Martin del Potro was victorious over Robin Soderling, 6-3, 6-2.
In women’s action, the number two-seeded Kim Clijsters defeated Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3; Ana Ivanovic was victorious over Virginie Razzano, 2-6, 6-2, 3-0, when Razzano was forced to retire due to injury; Francesca Schiavone defeated Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-4, 7-6 (2); and Agnieszka Radwanska was a winner over Maria Kirilenko, 7-6 (2), 6-3.
