American Mardy Fish says he feels mentally and physically ready to return to the ATP Tour, targeting the BB&T Atlanta Open on July 22 as his return. The 31-year-old Fish has played in just one ATP Tour event since pulling out of the 2012 U.S. Open before his fourth-round match last September after a medical scare with an irregular heartbeat.

"You just try to get in the best possible mental state," said Fish in a conference call Tuesday.

Should his run at the BB&T Atlanta Open go well, Fish also plans on playing in Citi Open in Washington, D.C. beginning July 29. Both of these events, should Fish experience no complications or setbacks, could serve as a return by Fish to the U.S. Open at the end of August. In early August, three ATP Tour events in Toronto, Cincinnati and Winston-Salem, N.C. could be the final tune-ups Fish needs in order to take part in the final Grand Slam event of 2013, the U.S. Open.

Fish had been ranked as high as seventh in the world.
