Five Americans Qualifiers Into 2012 Wimbledon Main Draw

On the final day of the 2012 Wimbledon Qualifiers, five Americans qualifiers have made it through to the main draw.

On the women’s side of the draw for the 2012 Wimbledon Qualifiers, 20-year-old Coco Vandeweghe earned a spot in the main draw at the All-England Lawn Tennis Club after her 6-2, 6-7, 7-5 win against Lara Arruabarrena-Vecin of Spain. Vandeweghe is the only American qualifier to make it through on the women’s side. Vandeweghe has a tough test ahead as she drew 2012 French Open runner-up Sara Errani of Italy in the first round.

On the men’s side of the draw, four Americans made it through to the main draw as Michael Russell, Ryan SweetingJesse Levine and Brian Baker all qualified for the main draw. Russell defeated Yuichi Sugita of Japan, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in a hard-fought match. Sweeting earned his spot by defeating Peter Torebko of Germany. Levine defeated fellow American, Wayne Odesnick, 7-6, 6-1, 6-2, and Baker was a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 winner over Maxime Teixeira of France.

In opening round action, Russell will face Spain’s Adrian Menendez-MacEiras, Sweeting drew Potito Starace of Italy, Levine will face Slovakian Karol Beck, and Baker will face Portugal’s Rui Machado.

Action begins at the All-England Lawn Tennis Club this Monday, June 25th.
