The USTA has announced that former New York City Mayor and current USTA Board Member David Dinkins has been honored with the 2010 United States Tennis Association’s President’s Award. The announcement was made at the USTA Semiannual meeting held on Sept. 6 at the Grand Hyatt in New York City.

The President’s Award honors an individual who has given unusual and extraordinary service to the sport of tennis in the public’s interest. Since its inception in 1999, award recipients have included Billie Jean King, Lindsay Davenport, Mike Bryan and Bob Bryan.

“Mayor Dinkins has been an advocate for the sport and major contributor in our efforts to grow the game,” said USTA Chairman of the Board and President Lucy S. Garvin. “It has been an honor to serve alongside him on the USTA Board of Directors and the entire tennis community has benefitted from his incredible passion, dedication and commitment.”

Mayor Dinkins, an active leader on several regional and national USTA committees, has served six consecutive two-year terms as the USTA’s Director at Large and is currently the longest-serving member on the USTA Board of Directors. While Dinkins is known for his political contributions to the New York City area and his passion for the sport of tennis, his work with the public extends far beyond the political arena and the court.

A committed member of the New York Junior Tennis League, NYJTL Youth Centers Inc. and New York City Sports Commission, Dinkins is dedicated to his work with local youth and also serves on the boards of the Children’s Health Fund, the Association to Benefit Children and the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund. For his outstanding leadership and legacy of service within the tennis industry, Mayor Dinkins also has been named a lifetime member of the USTA’s Eastern Section.
