The International Federation Beach Tennis (IFBT) World Championships have been in existence for many years, but in that time, no American team has ever been able to medal at the premier IFBT event.
This year it was held in Barcelona, Spain and Team USA’s Mens Doubles Team was made up of two brothers: Matteo Godio and Fabio Godio. The Godio brothers didn’t just head overseas to Spain to take part though, they knew the history and wanted to bring the first American medals back home.
And that they did!
Using great teamwork and relying on big serves, they were able to get to the semifinals before losing. They then won the third place match to reach the medal stand.
In receiving bronze medals, the Godio brothers will now go down in history as the first American medalists at the IFBT World Championships.
“It was an honor to represent Team USA our here in Barcelona,” said Matteo Godio. “My brother and I took great pride in making our country proud and winning medals. Hopefully it is now a step in the right direction for American Beach Tennis and the sports US players will continue to have success in years to come.”
