Gulbis Bounced Early By Stakhovsky At Wimbledon

Two days after his entertaining interview that saw him confuse “umpires” and “vampires,” 12th seeded Ernests Gulbis’ Wimbledon run came to an end in the second round on Wednesday.

The Latvian was beaten by Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky, who didn’t lose a set on his way to the 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(5) victory. It isn’t the first time Stakhovsky has pulled off a second-round upset at Wimbledon as he beat seven-time champion Roger Federer in last year’s tournament.

Stakhovsky, the 90th ranked player in the world, will now move on to the third round and a matchup with either Jeremy Chardy or Marinko Matosevic, who were battling it out on Court 17.

The Ukrainian played mistake-free tennis which made up for a not-so-dominant serve. He lost 15 of his first service points but committed only nine unforced errors to counter. Gulbis’ serve struggled as well despite his nine aces as he also had nine double-faults to limit his serve’s potential.

20TH seeded South African Kevin Anderson also advanced early Wednesday,   beating Frenchman Edouard Roger Vasselin 7-6(0), 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 to move into the third round. He awaits the winner of 16th seeded Italian Fabio Fognini and German Tim Puetz.
