Tommy Haas, in his 11th appearance in Hamburg, advanced to the quarterfinals of the German Tennis Championships on Thursday by beating Carlos Berlocq 6-2, 6-4. Berlocq is coming off of a win at the SkiStar Swedish Open in Bastad, Sweden which was his first title win. Haas seems to have trouble when in the lead, and dropped his serve at 5-2 in the second set. On his fourth match point, he closed out a win with a forehand winner.

Haas was a Hamburg finalist last year, and was beaten by defending champ Juan Monaco. Monaco beat ninth-seeded Benoit Paire of France 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 to set up a match against Nicolas Almagro.

Haas will next face Fabio Fognini of Italy, who won his first title in Stuttgart last week.
