Simona Halep became the third player to qualify for the BNP Paribas WTA Finals in Singapore, the WTA announced Monday. The second-ranked player in the world has enjoyed a breakout year in 2014, and has shot up to No. 2 in the world rankings.

“Simona Halep’s ascent over the last couple of years has been incredible, and she has become one of the elite players in the game,” said WTA Chairman and CEO Stacey Allaster. “As the countdown to Singapore continues, the Asian swing is an exciting time on the Road to Singapore as the picture becomes more clear about who will be competing on the ultimate stage for women’s tennis.”

The Romanian follows in the footsteps of Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova, who have already qualified for the year-end event presented by SC Global.

Along with titles in Doha and Bucharest in 2014, Halep has fared very well in Grand Slams this year. She reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open to start the year, and followed it up by reaching the French Open Finals before falling to Maria Sharapova. She made it to the final four at Wimbledon, and has shot up nine spots in the world rankings.

She is the highest-ranked Romanian in history and becomes only the third from her country to participate in the WTA Finals.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to compete in the WTA Finals,” said Halep. “I’ve had great success this year, and I’m looking forward to competing against the best players in the world in Singapore.”
