American Mardy Fish has announced his withdrawal from the 2012 U.S. Open due to health concerns. He was scheduled to face top-seeded Roger Federer today at Arthur Ashe Stadium to close out the Day Session. Fish’s withdrawal gives Federer a walkover to the quarterfinals where he will play Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, a 7-6, 6-4, 6-1 winner over the 11th-seeded Nicolas Almagro of Spain.

“I regret that I have to withdraw from the U.S. Open for precautionary measures," said Fish in a statement. "I was reluctant to do so, but am following medical advisement. I had a good summer and look forward to resuming my tournament schedule in the fall.”

Fish has been plagued by health issues on more than one occasion in 2012. He was forced to pull out of playing for the U.S. Davis Cup team in April and was seen by doctors in Key Biscayne during the Sony Ericsson Open after facing extreme fatigue. The 30-year-old Fish has already missed nearly two months this year due to an accelerated heartbeat and underwent treatment in May.

Fish, seeded 23rd at the U.S. Open, sees his run at the final Grand Slam of 2012 come to an end after a grueling 6-1, 5-7, 7-6, 6-3 win over Gilles Simon of France; a marathon 4-6, 6-7, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 five-setter against Russian Nikolay Davydenko; and an opening round 7-6, 7-6, 6-3 win over Japan’s Go Soeda.
