Roger Federer was upset in the second round of the 2013 Crédit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad in Switzerland, losing to Daniel Brands 6-3, 6-4. Brands, currently ranked 55th in the world, claimed the fourth top 10 win of his career (4-9 record) with a solid serving display. Brands, who tested Rafael Nadal in the first round of the French Open in May, hit 11 aces and saved the five break points he faced to avenge the defeat he had suffered at Federer’s hands in the first round of Hamburg last week. Brands will next face Victor Hanescu, who advanced at the expense of eighth seed Roberto Bautista Agut, as Hanescu was leading 7-6(2), 3-2 when Bautista Agut retired with a back injury.
Also advancing was Robin Haase who will face Marcel Granollers in the quarterfinals after Haase upset the third-seeded Janko Tipsarevic, 6-2, 6-2. Haase is seeking his second ATP World Tour semifinal of the season and will look to overturn a 0-1 FedEx ATP Head2Head record against Granollers. Granollers will contest his third quarterfinal of the season after defeating Federico Delbonis 6-2, 7-5.
