Hometown Favorite Milos Raonic Advances at Rogers Cup in Toronto
Milos Raonic was victorious in his hometown of Toronto at the 2012 Rogers Cup when he defeated Victor Troicki 6-3, 6-4 in the first round.
"It feels good. I’m proud with the way I competed, with the way I played," said Raonic. "I did a lot of important things well, and I have some space for improvement for my next match." Raonic broke Troicki’s serve in the eight game and proceeded to hold his own serve in order to win the first set.
The Canadian then went ahead 3-1 in the second set by breaking Troicki’s serve yet again in the third game and holding his own serve. He finished his service game off with an ace to clinch the lead.
In the sixth game of the second set, Raonic ran into some trouble serving, hitting a couple double-faults. He overcame these double faults to take the lead in the second set 4-2 and finishing the game off with an ace. On Troicki’s serve, Raonic said he may have forced shots in his return game near the end of the match.
The 21-year old hit seven aces during the one-hour, eight-minute match, making it his biggest weapon. Raonic wants to be known for more than a big serve and would like to continue to improve other aspects of his game.
"I think I was more effective on the return of serve, the break points that I created," said Raonic. "Other than that, tonight I did a lot of things well and I wasn’t in too really many pressure moments. I felt like I wasn’t making too many sloppy mistakes."
Next up, Raonic could face recent Olympic gold medalist and two-time Rogers Cup champion Andy Murray.
Americans Sam Querrey and Mardy Fish advanced to the third round at the Rogers Cup in Toronto. Querrey defeated Austrian Jurgen Melzer 6-3, 6-2. Fish easily defeated Australian Matthew Ebden 6-2, 6-0. In just 58 minutes, Querrey took the match with 11 aces and dropping only nine points on serve.
Other match results include: Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic defeated Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3, 6-1; South African Kevin Anderson was beaten by Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 6-1, 7-6 (3); Juan Monaco of Argentina was victorious against Canadian Vasek Pospisil 7-5, 6-4; and former world number two Tommy Haas of Germany defeated Argentinian David Nalbandian 6-2, 6-7(11), 6-3.
