The U.S. Davis Cup team has advanced to face the defending champion Spain in the semifinals of the 2012 Davis Cup tournament. The United States has already defeated both Roger Federer’s Switzerland team and France on the road.

John Isner was able to advance the U.S. team after his defeat over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in four sets 6-3, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3. This is the first time the United States has made it to the final four for the Davis Cup since 2008. “We’ve had the worst draw you could possibly imagine. I’m shocked that we’re still in the Davis Cup this year,” U.S. captain Jim Courier said. “We’re going to be the underdog in Spain, but we’re going to come with guns blazing.”

Isner has won both his single matches after he defeated Gilles Simon on Friday and held off Tsonga in his last match. Simon defeated Harrison in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 to make the final score 3-2. In the other quarterfinals, the Czech Republic defeated Serbia 4-1 and Argentina defeated Croatia 4-1. The semifinals will take place in September 2012.

The Americans defeated the French just like they did back in 2008 to set up a series against Spain. Spain won that year when played at home on clay. “Anytime you step on the court against Spain they’re tough. They beat us at home last year without Rafa, on hard court, indoors,” he said. “They have been the best team in the world for the past decade.”

“John played very close to his maximum,” Jim Courier said. “The quality of his match was exceptional. John is continuing to improve. I think he played even better than the last time (against Switzerland).” Isner along with his Americans was unable to resort to Mardy Fish who has been sidelined with fatigue. "He’s got great composure. When things are clear in your mind you’re able to execute better," said Courier.

Isner faced no break points in his match and was able to build upon the already strong United States momentum. Isner was able to clinch the tiebreaker set with an ace against Tsonga which came in at 141 mph. In regards to his demeanor he stated that "I didn’t get too frustrated. I was just enjoying it. I went out there and just tried to keep playing my game."
