JMTP Announces Johnny Mac Classic

The Johnny Mac Tennis Project (JMTP) is excited to announce that it will be holding the Johnny Mac Classic at SPORTIME Randall’s Island on Saturday, June 19th at 2:00pm. The Johnny Mac Classic is a team round-robin tennis event benefitting JMTP.
Hosted by John and Patrick McEnroe, the event is open to all tennis players with an NTRP rating of 3.5-5.0. The event’s format is inspired by the involvement of John and Patrick McEnroe in the upcoming 2021 Laver Cup to be held this fall in Boston, MA. This September, John McEnroe will once again try to captain Team World to victory against Bjorn Borg’s Team Europe, in a three-day team battle honoring tennis leg-end, Rod Laver.
Teams at the Johnny Mac Classic will be captained by world-class SPORTIME/John McEnroe Tennis Academy Directors and Coaches, and each team will be co-captained by a JMTP scholarship athlete. Event participants will play a combination of singles and doubles matches throughout the afternoon, and team captains reserve the right to sub in JMTP athletes for key points, adding an element of excitement and interaction to the event while allowing participants to experience the tremendous talent of JMTP scholarship athletes.
“We are thrilled to be able to host an in-person event and showcase some of the amazing work we are doing at JMTP. Our scholarship athletes have been working harder than ever throughout the pandemic and we look forward to continuing to support them, as well as to introduce tennis to more young hopefuls throughout the NYC area,” said JMTP Founder John McEnroe. “Additionally, Patrick and I are looking forward to the upcoming Laver Cup in Boston this September, and are excited to introduce a team format to tennis enthusiasts in NYC in service of our great mission.”
“The Laver Cup event brings a fun, competitive, team energy to tennis and we are hoping to capture that same spirit at the Johnny Mac Classic”, said JMTP Executive Director, Jordan Botjer. “We are so proud of all of our players and how resilient they have been the last year and we look forward to high- lighting these amazing athletes while we continue to expand our outreach into under resourced communities in the NYC metro area.”
