Germany’s Angelique Kerber won her fourth title of the season on Sunday, beating Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 to win the Bank of the West Classic trophy in Stanford.
In this tightly-contested match that lasted over two hours, Kerber was just a bit more efficient than Pliskova. While Pliskova nearly doubled her up in the winners department, 52 to 27, she also committed 52 unforced errors which proved to be costly.
A forehand winner allowed Kerber to win the title on her first match point.
“I want to say well done to Karolina for a great week,” said a gracious Kerber. “We always have tough battles when we play each other—you’re a great tennis player and a great person, and I wish you all the best in Toronto next week. And actually I think we’ll have more finals against each other in the future!”
The win ties Kerber with world number one Serena Williams for the most titles on the WTA Tour this season and now sits atop the Emirates Airline U.S. Open Series Women’s Bonus Challenge.
