The opening rounds of the U.S. Open Junior Boys and Girls tournaments got underway on Sunday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center with three local players from Long Island in action.

Northport’s Cannon Kingsley knocked off ninth-seed Gilbert Soares Klier of Brazil 6-2, 6-3 in one hour and four minutes. Kingsley saved each of the six break points he faced and converted on all three of his break chances to advance. He moves on to play the winner of Belgian Arnaud Bovy and American Axel Nefve.

Dix Hills native Lea Ma needed just one hour and seven minutes to beat Francesca Curmi of Malta 6-3, 6-4. The 16th seed next plays either Lenka Star of Slovakia or France’s Manon Leonard.

Elysia Bolton of Cold Spring Harbor won the first set in her opening round match but would fall to eighth-seeded Canadian Leylah Fernandez in three sets.
