Kvitova Knocks Off Wozniacki To Reach Beijing Quarterfinals

Petra Kvitova played nearly flawless tennis at the China Open on Thursday, breezing past Caroline Wozniacki 6-1, 6-4 to book her spot in the quarterfinals in just one hour and 13 minutes.
“I think it was a pretty good match from my side,” said Kvitova. “I didn’t really make any east mistakes or unforced errors or whatever. My serve helped me a lot, as well. It was improving all-the match. Especially from the second set, I really attacked her.”
Kvitova saved all four break points she faced and broke the serve of Wozniacki four times throughout the match. The Czech improves her head-to-head record against the Dane to 7-5.
In the quarterfinals, Kvitova will take on her compatriot Barbora Strycova, who knocked off Australia’s Daria Gavrilova 6-0, 6-4 on Thursday.
Romania’s Sorana Cirstea upset fourth-seeded Karolina Pliskova 6-1, 7-5. Cirstea broke the big-serving Pliskova six times in seven tries to advance in straight sets.
She plays French Open champion and ninth-seed Jelena Ostapenko. The Latvian led 3-0 before Shuai Peng retired from their match on Thursday.
The other Beijing quarterfinals will see France’s Caroline Garcia face off against third-seed Ukrainian Elena Svitolina, and second-seed Simona Halep of Romania play Russia’s Daria Kasatkina.
