LI High School Recap: Tuesday, October 15

With the Nassau County Individual Championships on tap for this weekend, the regular season came to a close on Tuesday afternoon. 

The Syosset Braves, who will enter the playoffs as the third seed, celebrated Senior Day as it took on Conference I champions Port Washington. The Vikings wrapped up its undefeated season with a 5-1 victory, led by wins from its top three singles players: Thea Rabman, Andrea Martinez de los Rios and Ellie Ross. 

 

Great Neck North locked up the second seed in the county tournament as it downed Roslyn 7-0. Barrett Kanfer and Lauren Yu came back from a set down to beat Julia Friedman and Skylar Schuman 5-7, 6-3, 10-6 at third doubles to lead the way for the Blazers.

Sealing the fourth seed was the Hewlett Bulldogs, who notched a 6-1 triumph over Cold Spring Harbor on Tuesday. Nyla Gershfeld clinched her team’s victory with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Nicolette Loeffler at second singles.

Wheatley won Conference II-A, defeating Great Neck South 5-2 behind Emma Melnikov and Ilana Nimkoff’s 6-0, 0-6, 6-4 win at fourth doubles.

Lynbrook and Oceanside were still battling to decide who won Conference II-B, with both teams entering Tuesday with just one defeat on the season.

Purnima Sengupta outlasted Alexia Freebody 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 at third singles as Hicksville edged Carle Place.

Jericho’s Vishnumaya Nair was a victory in straight sets to help Jericho edge Manhasset.

â–ºGarden City 4, Plainview JFK 3
Kristen Mangione and Maggie McElroy battled back from a set down to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at second doubles as Garden City notched the tight win.

►​Bellmore JFK 7, New Hyde Park 0
Julia Wender, Stamatia Papazis and Danielle Wender won at first, second and third singles, respectively, as Bellmore JFK swept New Hyde Park.

â–ºLocust Valley 4, Friends Academy 3
Locust Valley won all four doubles flights, including Avery DeNatale and Olivia Cody’s 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 win at first doubles, to narrowly beat Friends Academy.
