Marat Safin is Newest Addition to Russia’s House of Parliament

Marat Safin, a former top-ranked tennis player, has won a seat in Russia’s lower house of Parliament and will go onto represent the pro-Kremlin party United Russia. The 31-year-old Safin will be one of the youngest members of the Russian legislature.

Safin retired from tennis in 2009 ending his career with two Grand Slam titles and a ranking of number one in the year 2000. Other new seat holders include boxer Nikkolai Valuev and Olympic champion wrestler Alexander Karelin. The three add to a total of a 450-seat legislature which will represent the Prime Minister Vladimir Putin United Russia party.
