Bethanie Mattek-Sands’ upset over Italian Francesca Schiavone, 6-4, 6-4, gave the United States a 2-0 lead over Italy at the Hyundai Hopman Cup, held at the Burswood Dome in Australia. John Isner won a close match against Potito Starace 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4, getting the Americans one step closer to this weekend’s Hopman Cup Finals.

For 21 years, the Hopman Cup has been serving up the very best in international tennis to the sport-loving Western Australian public. No less than 21 world number one-ranked players, including legends such as Boris Becker, Steffi Graf, Serena Williams and John McEnroe, have thrilled the packed crowds at the Burswood Dome. Stars such as Roger Federer, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis and Novak Djokovic have used the Hopman Cup as a springboard for future success.

The American duo of Mattek-Sands and Isner will next play in mixed-doubles against the Italians, and the U.S. has one match left on Friday against England.
