The OUE Singapore Slammers edged out the OBI UAE Royals 27-24 in International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) action on Tuesday, as Scot Andy Murray knocked off Switzerland’s Roger Federer 6-4 in the deciding set.
The two met in the fifth and final set with the Slammers ahead by a slim margin of 21-20. Murray broke early on in the set, and despite Federer getting one of those breaks back, it wasn’t enough as Murray eventually outlasting Federer 6-4 to clinch the victory for the Slammers.
Federer actually won seven of nine points at the net, but Murray’s groundstrokes at the baseline were too much for the Swiss Maestro. Murray took advantage of an uncharacteristic 15 unforced errors off of Federer’s racquet, and only committed seven himself, to lead the Slammers to the win.
The win moves the Slammers to 5-3 in the league, while the Royals drop to 3-5.
Murray will lead the Slammers into a matchup with the first-place Micromax Indian Aces on Wednesday.
