Britain’s Andy Murray defeated an error-prone Roger Federer 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday to win the Shanghai Masters, his second title of the year. Fourth-seeded Murray broke Federer’s serve four times while fighting off six break points. Murray also served six aces, twice the number Federer had.
Murray, who didn’t drop a set in the tournament, has now beaten Federer eight times in 13 meetings, including the last two. Murray’s win was also the most lopsided match the two have played.
Federer, who will rise one spot to the number two spot in the rankings as a result of reaching the final, was attempting to win his 64th career title. That would have tied him with Pete Sampras for fourth on the all-time titles list.
With his third-round win Thursday, Murray also became the fourth player to qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals in London next month, joining top-ranked Rafael Nadal, Federer and Djokovic.
