ATP World Men’s Singles number three Andy Murray has announced that he will have surgery on his back on Monday, forcing him out of a few year-end ATP events, including the Thailand Open, China Open, Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships and Shanghai Rolex Masters. Murray’s appearance at the end-of-season ATP World Tour Finals in London in November is in jeopardy as well.

Murray missed the French Open earlier this year due to a lower back injury, but returned to capture titles at The Queen’s Club and at Wimbledon. Murray won both of his matches against Croatia in Davis Cup action last weekend to lead Great Britain back into the World Group.

“The problem flared up during the Italian Open this year when Andy was forced to retire and he sought advice from a range of specialists," said a statement from Murray’s management team.

Murray stated on his Twitter account: "Having operation on Monday … Will let everyone know how it goes … I’ll be ‘back’ stronger."
