Rafael Nadal of Spain and Roger Federer of Switzerland advanced to the quarterfinals of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters with straight-set victories on Thursday. Nadal disposed of Richard Gasquet of France, 6-2, 6-4, while Federer cruised to 6-4, 6-3 win over Croatian Marin Cilic. Nadal will face Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia in the quarterfinals, as Federer will play Austrian Jurgen Melzer.
Nadal has lost his last three finals—once to Federer and twice against second-ranked Novak Djokovic—and is without a title since winning the Japan Open in October.
Third-seeded Andy Murray and the number four seed David Ferrer also advanced to the quarterfinals. Ljubicic defeated fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-2 to reach his third quarterfinal of the season, while Melzer won 6-1, 6-4 against the number nine seed, Nicolas Almagro of Spain.
