Rafael Nadal won his first title on a grass-court since 2010 on Sunday, defeating Serbia’s Viktor Troicki 7-6(3), 6-3 to win the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, Germany.
After taking the first set in a tie-breaker, Nadal notched his first break point of the match to go up 3-1 in the second set. From there, the top-seeded Spaniard would go on to serve out the rest of the match for the title.
“I’m really, really happy,” said Nadal. “It’s my second win this year and it gives me a lot of confidence. It was a great week for me.”
Nadal saved the only break point he faced in the one hour and 27 minute victory. It is his first grass court title since winning Wimbledon five years ago.
In the men’s doubles final, Rohan Bopanna & Florin Mergea came back to beat Alexander Peya & Bruno Soares 5-7, 6-2, 10-7.
“It’s my first title on grass, the first time I actually had four wins on grass since I started playing again,” said Mergea. “I’m really happy to come and win a second title with Rohan.”
