Nadal’s Quest for Four Consecutive Grand Slams is Stopped by Ferrer

Rafael Nadal was stopped in his pursuit for his fourth consecutive Grand Slams on Wednesday at the 2011 Australian Open, losing his quarterfinal match to David Ferrer of Spain, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3. Nadal took a medical timeout after three games as he seemed to be favoring his leg. Nadal who won the 2010 French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open was seeking his record tying fourth consecutive Grand Slam, a feat last achieved in 1969 by Rod Laver.

Ferrer advances to the semifinals along with Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

Women’s semifinalists include Kim Clijsters and Vera Zvonareva, as Clijsters advanced on Wednesday with a 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over Agnieszka Radwanska. Zvonareva advanced with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Petra Kvitova. Caroline Woziacki will face Li Na of China in the other semifinal match at Melbourne Park.
