Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka scored a shocking upset Thursday afternoon at the 2013 U.S. Open, eliminating defending champion Andy Murray on Arthur Ashe Stadium, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2. It will mark Warwinka’s first ever semifinal appearance in 35 Grand Slam appearances. Wawrinka fired 45 winners to Murray’s 15, and won 107 points to Murray’s 78.

Wawrinka had previously upset Murray in 2010 at the U.S. Open, third round 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory. Wawrinka awaits the winner of this evening’s match between the top-seeded Novak Djokovic and the 21-seeded Mikhail Youzhny of Russia.

"I don’t know if I’m meant to win every Grand Slam that I play," said Murray after the match.

Murray had entered the quarterfinals with an 8-5 lead over Wawrinka lifetime, but lost their most recent meeting this past April in Monte-Carlo. This also marks the first time the defending champion has failed to reach the semifinals at the Open since 2004.

“Andy is the defending champion," said Wawrinka. "He’s a tough opponent. I’m just really happy. It was a crazy match for me. To beat him in three sets is just amazing.”
