The ATP and WTA Tours headed north of the border this past week as the men competed in Toronto and the women competed in Montreal, with both draws featuring some of the highest-ranked players in the world.

On Sunday, both events finished up with the two singles finals, as Italy’s Jannik Sinner captured the National Bank Open championship in Toronto, while American Jessica Pegula took home the title at the Omnium Banque Nationale in Montreal.

Sinner defeated Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-1 in one hour and 30 minutes as he earned his first ATP Masters 1000 title.

“It means a lot. It is a great result,” said Sinner. “One I can share with all the people who are close to me every day. It is a nice moment to share with them and we are doing the right things. This result makes us feel good, stronger and hungry to work even harder in the future.”

The 21-year-old did not drop a set throughout the tournament, and now moves up two spots to No. 6 in the world rankings.

In Montreal, Pegula defeated world number one Iga Swiatek in the semifinals before dispatching Liudmila Samsonova 6-1, 6-0 to win the third title of her career. Samsanova was up against it on Sunday as she had to play her semifinal against Elena Rybakina earlier in the day after it was rained out on Sunday. She came back to win in three sets against Rybakina, but was unable to come up with anything against Pegula.

“Obviously, physically she wasn’t feeling her best, but at the same time I played a really clean match,” said Pegula. “I don’t really think I made any unforced errors or anything. I played kind of a perfect match. I could just play freely, and I kept trying to get the break and just hold for as long as I could until I won the match. So, yeah, it was a good day.”

Pegula remains at No. 3 in the world rankings.
