Radwanska Among the Field Advancing at the Montreal Cup

Agnieska Radwanska won her tough first match in the Montreal Cup on Thursday as she is continuing her climb to the world’s top ranking ahead of the U.S. Open. If she wins the $2 million event and Victoria Azarenka fails to reach the quarterfinals, the Pole will replace Azarenka as world number one. On Thursday, Radwanksa defeated German Mona Barthel in a tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5).
Many matches were post-poned due to rain but Radwanska was able to complete her match. she now faces Chanelle Scheepers in the third round. Azarenka’s match against Tamira Paszek was postponed due to rain. They must wait until Friday at the earliest to complete the match. Currently, the second round match is tied at 3-all in the opening set.
Former world number one, Ana Ivanovic, was crushed by Italian Roberta Vinci in just 44 minutes. Ivanovic failed to win a single game during the match. For the first time in five meetings, Jelena Jankovic fell to Canadian Alexsandra Wazniak 6-2, 6-3.
The 12th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova was upset by American Varvara Lepchenko 6-4, 6-4. Lepchenko now will play either Caroline Wozniacki or Kiki Bertens on Friday.
The 10th seed, China’s Li Na, defeated Canadian Eugenie Bouchard 6-4, 6-4. They completed the match right before rain halted all other play for the day. The harsh weather conditions made it difficult for all the players, Na said.
The 15th seed, German Sabine Lisicki, called for treatment during her loss to Caral Suarez Navarro of Spain. The Spaniard defeated Lisicki 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
