Radwanska and Serena Among Those in the Women’s Field Advancing in Cincinnati
Top seed Agnieszka Radwanska defeated American wild card entry Sloane Stephens, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 in nearly two hours to advance at the 2012 Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. For Agnieszka’s younger sister, Urszula Radwanska, the result was quite the opposite as she fell 4-6, 3-6 to the second seeded American and 2012 Olympic Gold Medal winner Serena Williams.
"I think they’re both great players, and great sisters. I absolutely love seeing another pair of sisters doing so well on the tour," Williams said of the Radwanska sisters. "Urszula has worked really hard, and me being a younger sister and Urszula being a younger sister too, I’m always looking for her to do well and I hope she does really well. Her game is great [Urszula]. What’s best about her game is she’s like her sister—she doesn’t do anything badly. Those are always tough opponents to play."
Serena is now through to her fourth quarterfinal since coming back from her seven-month illness and layoff.
Other winners advancing the number three seeded Sam Stosur, who defeated Ekaterina Makarova, 6-1, 6-3; fourth-seeded Petra Kvitova, who beat Peng Shuai, 6-2, 6-2; and the number five seed Angelique Kerber, who rallied from 4-1 down in the second set tie-break to beat Czech qualifier Andrea Hlavackova, 6-4, 7-6(5).
