On Wednesday night at the U.S. Open, Spanish pride was in the air, both in the crowd and on the courts, as two of the nation’s top players, Rafael Nadal and Tommy Robredo, squared off for a place in the semis. It was a very dominant Nadal who overcame his friend and fellow countryman Wednesday evening after his 6-0, 6-2, 6-2 win over Robredo. Nadal’s win, in just under 90 minutes extends his 2013 hard-court winning streak to 20 matches.
Nadal remains unbroken at the 2013 U.S. Open, holding 67 service games. He has won 27 of his past 28 matches against fellow Spaniards, and is now a perfect 7-0 lifetime over Robredo.
"I think I played my best match of the U.S. Open this year," Nadal said after the match.
Next up for Nadal is Richard Gasquet, a 6-3, 6-1, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3 upset winner over another Spaniard Wednesday afternoon, David Ferrer. Nadal will take top spot in the Emirates ATP Men’s Singles Rankings if he wins the title and Novak Djokovic does not reach the final.
