Three-time Wimbledon finalist Andy Roddick, who was seeded fifth, walked off Court Two in disbelief after a five set loss to Yen-Hsun Lu. Lu, the 26-year-old son of a chicken salesman from Taiwan who said he had no family in the crowd and who gave himself little hope after the fourth set, achieved a career best, beating Roddick, 4-6, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 9-7, Monday in the fourth round. This was a shocking and disappointing loss for Roddick. The 27-year-old Roddick hadn’t lost to Lu in three previous meetings. In his career, Roddick was 115-37 in Grand Slam matches, while Lu was 10-18. On grass Roddick was 73-17, while Lu came in 12-17.

Roddick called his play "horrendous" in the first three sets and others agreed. John McEnroe (announcing the match on tv) said, "He played so passively, so tentatively. That’s going to be a really tough one to overcome."

Fellow analyst Lindsay Davenport agreed. "It’s so disappointing for Andy," she said. "He just didn’t play the right way; he needed to be more aggressive. I think it’s going to take him a long time to get over this one."

With Monday’s early exit of 18th-seeded Sam Querrey, who lost to fourth-seeded Andy Murray 7-5, 6-3, 6-4, there are, for the fourth time in the last 10 years, no American men in the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

In other mens action Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic all advanced with impressive wins. Robin Soderling needed five sets to defeat David Ferrer and Tomas Berdych set up a Quarterfinal match with Roger Federer by defeating Daniel Brandis in four sets.

On the women’s side, Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic upset third-seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, 6-2, 6-0, while in the two highest profile matches of the day, Kim Clijsters overcame a one set deficit to defeat Justine Henin in three sets, while Serena Williams used her big serve to defeat Maria Sharapova to advance to the quarterfinals. Second-seeded Venus Williams advanced in straight sets.

In men’s doubles the Bryan Brothers advanced to the thrid round with a straight sets victory.
