Roddick’s Retirement Run at the U.S. Open Continues With Friday Nightcap Win
American Andy Roddick who announced yesterday that he is playing in his last pro tournament, defeated Australian teenager Bernard Tomic 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 under the lights at Arthur Ashe Stadium Friday night, ensuring that his final run at the final Grand Slam of 2012 will live to see another day. The 20th-seeded Roddick, the 2003 U.S. Open champion, rolled out to a 3-0 lead to start the match and finished the match on a nine-game run before 24,00-plus supporters at Ashe Stadium. He limited the 19-year-old Tomic to just five points total in the third set, closing the match in just under 90 minutes.
“It’s been emotional," said Roddick in his post-match meeting with the media. "I’ve been through a lot, but no matter how many matches you play this is a first time for me. It’s going to be tough out there, but I’m going to try and enjoy every minute.”
Roddick’s run for U.S. Open glory continues Sunday as he faces 59th-ranked Fabio Fognini of Italy, a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 winner over Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez on Friday.
“I’m going to look forward to it,” said Roddick of his Sunday meeting with Fognini. “I’m going to try and stick around a little longer.”
