It was a weekend of firsts for both Andrey Rublev and Iga Swiatek in Madrid, as each player won the Mutua Madrid Open titles for the first time, with Rublev claiming the men’s singles title on Sunday while Swiatek earned her women’s singles title on Saturday.

Swiatek battled past the player directly beneath her in the WTA Rankings, Aryna Sabalenka, in a thrilling three-set affair that required the Polish star to save three break points, eventually winning 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(7).

“I think it was more about who’s going to be less stressed and who’s going to be able to play with more freedom,” Swiatek said. “I think actually for most of the match, I felt like some decisions [from her] were pretty courageous. I was sometimes a little bit back. So at the end, I just wanted to not do that and to also be courageous.”

It was the 10th meeting overall between the two top players, but just the first this season. Swiatek earned her first chance at championship point at 6-5 in the deciding tiebreaker, and a sailed forehand by Sabalenka clinched the match for Swiatek.

“At the end, I don’t know what made a difference,” Swiatek said. “I think we both kind of deserved to win today. I think it was only about these little points in the tiebreaker.”

The win further bolsters Swiatek’s grip on the top-ranked spot in the world as she is now more than 3,500 points ahead of Sabalenka.

On Sunday, Rublev won what he called the “proudest title of his career”, coming back from a set down to defeat Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 to win the Madrid crown.

“I have no words. If you knew what I had been through in the past nine days you would not imagine that I would be able to win a title,” said Rublev. “I’m incredibly happy. That one week changed everything because now it looks like I was not losing the last weeks in the first round!”

With the match tied at one set all, Rublev dominated on his serve in the decider, winning 93 percent of the points on his first serve and holding in all of his games to win his second title of the season.

Rublev climbs two spots up to No. 6 in the ATP rankings.
