Serena and Zvonareva to Face Off in Wimbledon Women’s Final
July 1, 2010 | By Long Island Tennis Magazine Staff
The women’s final of the 2010 Wimbledon is set, as top-seeded Serena Willams will face Russia’s Vera Zvonareva. Zvonareva advanced to her first Grand Slam final after rallying to defeat unseeded Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria, 3-6, 6-3 6-2 in today’s first semifinal. The momentum swung the Russian’s way after she broke Pironkova midway through the second set and then Zvonareva maintained control the rest of the way.
In the day’s second semifinal, what looked on paper to be a mismatch was tougher than expected. World number one-ranked Serena Williams advanced to the finals with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Petra Kvitova. Serena will look for back-to-back Wimbledon titles (she defeated sister Venus Williams in last year’s finals) and her fourth overall championship at the All-England Club.
Pironkova’s and Kviova’s defeats ended their bids to become the first unseeded women to reach the final at the All-England Club.
The womens final will be played Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. EST.
